Joss Ramirez : High Quality Guitar
Joss Ramirez Planell (1858-1923) and
his brother Manuel (1864-1916) were the founders of the Ramirez dynasty of
guitar makers that came to define the Madrid School. When Jose Ramirez was just
12, he was apprenticed to Francisco González (1818c-1880c). In 1882, José
opened his own workshop in the Rastro of Madrid, on Cava Baja-- a street that
runs along what was the moot around the old city, and his brother Manuel
Ramirez in as an apprentice. In 1890 José moved his shop to Concepcion Jerónimo
2 where it remained for over a hundred years.
Jose
Ramirez was awarded a gold medal for his high quality guitar at the Logroño exposition in
1897. He
was the most remarkable guitar maker of that time. Every famous guitarist would
turn to him and let him make a personal and handmade guitar back then.
